From looking after 10 hives myself,i am down to one strong Hygienic hive - ie I have never treated this hive for anything.

I also chose not to take any honey off this hive to keep them as strong as possible. Currently a Deep and Three supers which were full when last checked in September.

Hoping this winter is not too bad on the bees and can start rebuilding next season.

Any boys interested in learning , please contact me

Congrats

Very disappointing turn out though - only one leader myself and 2 boys, I hope the other boys and participants will still be involved going forward.

We opened up the hive for an inspection, while we did not pull the whole hive apart, we did get down into the brood area and see newly laid eggs and while stores are a bit low the bees are bringing in nectar and pollen, so OK for now. We saw a few small hive beatles, no verroa in the drone brood - which is great news - and good solid activity in all 4 boxes of bees, stores are a little low compared to last time, so bees were eating a bunch while the bad weather endured, but now we are on warm to hot forecasts so will replenish soon

Joe took a number of photo's , so we will see those up here soon.

Congrats to Dylan and Jack - bringing the number of boys who completed all tasks and thus earning Bee Keeper Merit Badge to 4 out of the 9 who started. I know of three more who will probably also complete theirs in near future.

Looking to be a good season, lets all be involved and come out.

NOTE : if the times do not agree , be proactive and ask for another time and if I am available I will gladly assist you , even during the week. This is about YOU learning to take care of the bees.
To open a hive we want temps about 55, and no blowing wind and no thunder activity or rain.Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-62717792013258643842013-04-04T11:53:00.001-04:002013-04-04T11:53:45.129-04:00Beehive work this Sunday at 1:30Looks like this weekend will be great weather.

We will inspect the hive @1:30 pm Sunday afternoon sharp.

Long sleeves etc etc. lets see a great turn out.

If we have thunder or IF it is raining, we will not work the hives but we will do some workshop work, so please still come..... I would like to have an idea who will be coming please,so please email me or just respond to this post in comments (that also emails me).

Remember it will be hot, have water bottles and also light colored long sleeve shirt/ long pants , BUT we will also take another look at Honey Extraction, so have short sleeves too plus clothes that will take getting sticky too.

We also need to add some wax foundation to frames, so boys who have NOT yet done this work I suggest you offer to do this..... when we start I will list out the tasks , and you boys will do all the work this time,

Important I am going to start evaluating all of you on Hive management.

I would like you all to divide up into teams this Sunday and each team will work 1 hive.

From the moment we walk into the Apiary, you boys will be in charge on Sunday. We will meet under the big Maple tree at the entrance at 2pm sharp......all equipment will be already in place at the hives.

You will open the hive (doing all that you have to to make this happen- think about what you need to do before opening a hive)
You will look for Brood, both capped and uncapped, and also show us eggs
You will point out honey, nectar, and pollen stores in the hive to one of the mentors
And if lucky , find the queen
You will then close up the hive - doing everything you need to do ,(to do his correctly, think of important things you must do......)
You may ask questions at any time if unsure , this will not be a negative in your evaluation

Those who don't yet have books read up on the forum pages please, as all the relevant sections will be posted in the Tabs, and I will get you your books... $3 each

Honey extraction is HOT, Sticky work

We start by cutting off the cappings (the white wax covering the honey cells),
we then drain the comb by spinning it in an Extractor,
the room needs to be HOT, at least 96 degrees, so that the honey will flow and be spun out of the comb.
The comb is then reused and put back on the hives for the Bees to fill again, any damaged area they will fix.Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-47290696684338798892012-06-28T14:37:00.004-04:002012-06-28T14:37:37.601-04:00Catch a swarm ..... Before it flies.Yep that is what happened two Saturday s ago, I was introducing a scout from Troop 106 , and his dad, to the concept of beekeeping, and we walked up and saw a very small bundle of bees in the grass.

I poked around a bit and found a queen, very neat !! Had to run up to the house to get my bee box and queen clip, and returned in time to easily catch her.

Left the clip on the ground with other bees while I prepared a nuc for her. Took but 3 minutes before 5-6000 bees were flying above us. Very cool feeling, and the sound was amazing . And within 5 minutes they had calmed down and started to walk back into the hive.....nothing to see here, move along now.

So we caught a swarm before it swarmed, neat! Also discovered that one of my Wayne's hives seems to have lost their queen too, and had been overrun with Slimy damn larvae of SHB. Lost about 6 frames so far. Took them out into the sun about 50 ft away and let the bees take can of them. Will pull the honey supers before they get infected too.

Such is beekeeping, Win one, lose a bigger one.

The beekeeping books have been returned from the printers, they look fantastic.Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-940635876707726002012-06-27T15:17:00.002-04:002012-06-28T14:35:52.228-04:00Bees are still workingOk scouts , scouters and parents

The bees are working away and we need to be sure we stay on top of the hives.

SUNDAY 2pm,1st July..... we will work our hives, and maybe do some honey extraction if everything ready.( me more than anything else) it is very hot and sticky job , so be prepared. long sleeves and pants for working the hives and shorts for honey work.

I am almost done with our worksheets, and as I'm sure you already know our books are printed , so everyone will get a book. I ask only my direct costs , $3 each please, I am going to give them all out and expect you to settle with me in your own time, some extra books are still available, not many as I have sold a few on the forums too, to other folks who are working or will work with scouts or youth.

I would like each scout to have a worksheet and we will begin signing off all the functions you have done, like I said originally , we will do all of the Merit Badge requirements, and those that complete , we will embroider a badge onto your sash.
For those boys who have attended most sessions, you have done more than half the requirements, some need to be hands on in the hive and we will need to do some oral work near the fall , based on the book. Describing the 3 bees in a hive, some basics on the pests and disease we face in NC, etc

Pls let me know your attendance this weekendDrone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-16822180496469733382012-05-24T21:13:00.000-04:002012-05-24T21:13:22.106-04:00Bee working this Saturday, May 26...... 3pmWell folks, we might be doing something completely different this Saturday, weather permitting of course
Let's plan for 3 pm..... Will only take about 30 minutes or so.......
Some of you may remember how we tried to fix the problem hive by Adding a frame of bees to the hive to help them create their own Queen, this has not worked unfortunately, so to the next method......
Laying workers can get so ingrained in the own hive that they think they don't need a queen, so won't help create a new one like we tried.
So the best advice is to just shake the bees out, and let them take up with any hive they find, or we can motivate them to fill a hive in the same place as their own hive was.
So if all goes to plan tomorrow night I will bring back a small nuc hive I have made by trapping out a swarm from an old building, but it is very small, about 3 frames of bees. I will put this on top of the problem hive ready for Saturday.
So on saturday if the weather is nice, we will first remove all 10 frames from the bad hive, we will put the 5 frames from the trap out nuc into the box, then we will take the 10 frames about 20 feet away and shake all the bees off the frames. We will then put back the 5 best frames that have honey and pollen, that is to say we will avoid putting back as much brood or eggs as we can. The other frames will then be frozen for two days and put back into another hive later where the bees will clean them up.
We will also check if the other hive needs a new honey super, as two to two and half weeks has been typical to fill a super recently on a strong hive.
Pls let me knowDrone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-82631895641500134652012-05-16T23:32:00.000-04:002012-05-16T23:32:52.746-04:00Well we did work the bees last weekend......But no Scouts showed up , except Dylan.
We at least had two leaders who both have hives, and Rob one of our mentors, so we made it a teaching moment anyway, and worked the bees , we looked at the problem hive and they are still an issue,
workers laying is the opinion of Rob. They were also rather testy and gave us a hard time, had to put a veil on. I made a rather basic mistake when I last checked the hive after putting a brood frame into the hive 3 weeks ago, when I checked after 2 weeks I saw good laying pattern, but of course that was the same frame that they had just capped. 2 weeks is Not enough time for a queen to be made and to start laying, so my bad. So I will need to make a plan this weekend before camping.
We then put a honey super on the pkg hive which was so much gentler, and no issues at all, very nice brood patterns, eggs, larvae and capped cells across many frames, the bees have been working hard and all 8 frames were drawn out, other than one half gallon of feed they have been free ranging. Looking good for a few frames of honey for the scouts.
We also gave The Burns hive an inspection, and added a honey super on it too.
One thing we found is that the hive has spacers and only had 9 frames in the deep, so they had drawn some funky wide comb, we will fix later in the season. We did not notice this previously as we were focussed on the queen issue.
So I ask you all to please let me know when it is a bee day if you are not coming, this is about you scouts learning about bees, not me.
The book goes to the Publisher tomorrow , so we will have a Beekeeping manual by the time we next meet.
Anyone wanting bee experience any time , let me know, and if I am home and the weather cooperates , we can work bees, I am enjoying the education part of this program.Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-57228655573385152102012-05-09T23:59:00.003-04:002012-05-09T23:59:23.098-04:00ThIs Saturday - Bee work dayNeed to prepare some honey super frames with foundation .... Pls meet at the workshop at 2:30pm.
3 pm we will head across to work the hives , we will open both hives, check health and if possible mark the queen on the swarm hive.
Remember long sleeves, light colored clothes please
Boys will be doing the work this time, just guidance from me and mentors.
We will find the queen , look for larvae and eggs, maybe add a honey super on 8 frame hive.Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-47906910813044606212012-04-29T22:18:00.002-04:002012-04-29T22:18:25.855-04:00We did work the hives despite the cold dayWell the max temp was only 58deg, and a cold wind, not ideal, BUT we had an issue which we had to fix.

The Swarm hive only had drone brood in the hive, meaning we had a bad queen... she was infertile.

Drone Brood is layed when the queen lays an egg that is NOT fertilized.

Drone brood is identified by the Bullet like tops.

Thus we had to fix this issue or the hive would have died out.
Two options at this time - buy a Queen for $25
or
The option we chose - adding a frame of brood from the other hive which was working well,
To be successful you must choose a frame that has eggs as well as new larvae, his way the bees will create a new queen from an egg that is less that 3 days old.

Will check this frame in 4 days time, they should have a queen cell capped by then.

Ask questions via comments or email if you are not sure about what we did or how it will work.

Our manuals should go to printers within the next week.....yahooo!!!Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-25950678120680676682012-04-23T15:07:00.001-04:002012-04-23T15:17:47.532-04:00Installing our Package of beesBee..n a little buzzzy with bees and Scuba and family, and not got to update the blog until today.

WORK: Check on bees Saturday 28th April 3pm (Weather permitting) should take no more than 20-30 minutes of actual time, plus questions and answers if you have any.

Our installation of the pkg of bees Sponsored by Tates Apiaries from Winston Salem went very well. Larry Tate was a Boy Scout many years ago, and was happy to help us. The Queen we have is from Wayne's bees, a local Hygienic bee race. Wayne Rich kept bees in our area and had two hives that he never treated and these survived all the issues of the recent years. Wayne passed away a few years back and Wally Swaims and Larry Tate are keeping these genetics going. These bees will fight the Verroa Mites and Small Hive Beatles inside the hive, keeping the hive strong.

In the end most of the scouts in the Project were able to come last Saturday, which is pretty awesome. A number of people also invited friends and family and we had about 14 people in all. I had forgotten it was the Guilford County Bee club's open day , so none of our mentors were able to come, but it all went down without a hitch.
We went through some theory with the boys, passed the pkg around for people to feel 3lbs of bees, some 15,000 of them, and then without much ado and a little sugar spray, opened the pkg, showed everyone the Queen in her cage and shook out the bees into the 8 frame hive.Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-65497710451429556362012-04-06T22:50:00.001-04:002012-04-07T16:57:26.542-04:00Installing our package of beesThis coming Saturday 14 April we will install our new package of bees, lets keep the same time of 2pm

UNLESS the weather is bad, in which case we will do what we have to (if bad weather call me) ..... Am picking up the bees most likely early that Saturday.

I would like the Scouts (and leaders) to read the section on installing a pkg of bees, will attach it on tabs in next few days , as it is one section of our book still not complete ??? :-) so will be take a day or so
You all will have to do the work this time, so please read the section....

If you cannot be there, please email me your preferences to work bees, all boys need some hands on, AND, we need to decide on some teams......will have a THIRD hive soon too, another Local beekeeper, who is a former boy scout has offered more bees.

We have the hive woodenware, so will go ahead. We will just need to get some more frames and foundation .

...but in the mean time we need an hour in the Barn to wire and put foundation into more of our frames for our own hives we already have committed to.

Lets have some feedback from our Scouts and Parents on how you think this project is working??

Beekeepers in the Piedmont announced this week the Tulip Poplars have started to flower, this is HUGE news in our region, it is 3 weeks early, and a massively important nectar flow for our bees. we will see big growth in all hives in next 6 weeks.Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-88255871654797061092012-04-02T19:06:00.002-04:002012-04-07T22:38:08.243-04:00Pics from the Bee DaySo I forgot I never posted the few pics I have for you all to see them....
YES Really.Reminder next day is Saturday 31st March at 2pm , bring bee suitable clothes , light colors, long sleeves and pants, closed shoes

On the 31st we will be moving this swarm into its permanent hive box too, as the catch box has to go back to Mr Wally.

Mr Wally and I caught a LARGE swarm this afternoon.

Very obvious Nazinov behavior, bums in the air and fanning madly..... this is a way to spread their hive scent out , so other bees can find where the majority are and where the queen
It will be a hands on bees day - LIGHT colored clothes, covered up including feet, jeans are fine but have socks you can tuck in...if very hot dress with shorts and bring the other covering clothes with you. We have 6 veils , so no-one will be without head covering when working bees

Some may ask why Swarm Hive ? Well I name my hives, and this was the swarm caught across the road from my house last year, that I dropped onto Mr Wally and I, we both had bees all over us and did not get stung.

Parents , please print out the Spring Management page and ask your scout to read before next lesson... I will be asking questions from it. While all have done a great job working with the woodenware parts so far, we need to keep up the momentum and complete the education.

There is a very very good chance we will have bees by the next meeting, I would like to divide up all the Scouts / and leaders into two teams, and we will start working the hives by team, the second hive will be a Package, which will arrive mid April, and we will make a good day of installing them as a group.

Our Bee books are almost ready to go to the printer, I hope to finish editing in next week, have to bring it down by about 4 pages so the printer can give us a 50 page booklet in the end.

Please vote on Hive decorations - PARENTS - again get your boys involved in this.... the poll is top right of front page of the Blog.Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-9561166269934342662012-03-07T18:28:00.000-05:002012-03-07T18:28:00.034-05:00The bees are working the Maples hard - work dayWe will meet this Sunday 11th at 2pm

All hive parts are painted with second coat, Thanks Allen and Rob.

We wired at least 40 of the 70 frames, and have wax foundation in the first 8 frame super.....thanks Dylan and Harrison ..... that gives us enough to put one hive together if a swarm is caught in near future.

Next work day :

March 11, Sunday at 2pm

Our only Scout was Wesley on his 16th birthday too, he showed some of the adults how to make frames in the jig.

We finished the rest of the frames, did a demo of how to wire in foundation despite the cold, the wax shattered with one small tap of the hammer. We decided that it was too cold to realistically paint , as it was below freezing outside. So will catch up on painting on our next workday. It will NOT be on March 17, as I have to go to Scout Master Training that weekend now. I need to choose another date , so please check back.

We will also do an hour of book work next time, I will prep the lesson and it will on the tabs again. Hopefully by then I will have a quote on getting the books published.

So looking at our nice looking pale yellow hives, and I wondered if we have to keep them so plain, so looked up hive art.....

Any and all scouts (plus parents) welcome......even if not part of project and curious about what we are up to.... no bees will be harmed this weekend as too cold.

We will paint, build more frames and also start doing some wiring and wax foundation mounting, as so many boys will be missing, we wont do any theory this week, just hardware.
Anyone wanting to help prior to this date , contact me as i work in the wood shop on Bee stuff most free times, weekends always!!!Drone beehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16340519325109417914noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2383536867553616153.post-55940229040559515632012-01-16T22:41:00.002-05:002012-01-16T22:49:29.811-05:00First WorkdayOn one of only a few cold days this winter, we started work on building our hives.
8 boys, 3 assistant Scoutmasters, two parents and two Bee Keeping Mentors from the local club got together at the barn and split up into teams of two boys each. Some of the adults stayed real close to the heater in the corner of the barn.......LOL.

We did a quick revision of equipment, and gave each boy a handout. Not all took the handouts home, but all the info is on the Blog tab, and once the proof reading is complete, we will publish the full Beekeeping book and give one to each boy and adult taking part.

Each team had adults supervising , but the boys did the almost all the work. Two boys starting assembling Medium frames using a 10 frame assembly jig, two worked on Medium Super boxes glueing all the finger joints and putting the box into the squaring jig, two more then nailed the boxes together, and when we had a bunch of boxes ready , the last two sanded them ready for painting.

One thing I had not thought of, was that my workbenches have been designed for my height, so we had the boys working at too high a level and moved some of the work onto the wooden floors, both inside and outside the barn.

Another oversight was 11-13 year old boys with paint brushes....... yep paint everywhere......

A Great first workday and all who participated gave good feedback and I believe a great success.
